Richmond is located in Western Missouri, seven miles north of the Missouri River and 45 miles East of Kansas City. It is a rural community of over 6,000 residents, and claims to be the ‘Morel Mushroom Capital of the World’.
Richmond was founded in 1827, and named after Richmond, Virginia.
It is most notable for the trial of sixty Mormon men in 1838, amongst whom was Joseph Smith, the founder of the Mormon Church. Following the trial, all but six men were released. Joseph Smith was among the six who remained incarcerated.
Its festival, welcoming the coming of spring, has been held in the first weekend of May for 25 years.
