Richmond is a very small town of less than 600 people. Located on the Flinders Highway, 498 km west of Townsville and 406 km east of Mount Isa, Richmond is the administrative centre of the Richmond Shire.
Traditionally, the two biggest industries in Richmond have been sheep and cattle-farming, but tourism is now an increasingly important aspect of the local economy.
Recent paleontological discoveries have unearthed the fossils of prehistoric marine creatures, some of which are on display in Richmond at the fossil museum, Kronosaurus Korner.
